International law firm, Pinsent Masons, has been commended by
Business in the Community with the award of a 'Big Tick' for its
work with a local school. The Award was given for Pinsent
Masons' Mentoring Partnership with the Cockburn College of Arts in
Leeds. The Big Tick will be awarded to Pinsent Masons'
Partner Jonathan Fortnam at the Yorkshire and Humber Awards
Celebration Event on 19 June at Royal Armouries, Leeds.
The Award, supported by the Department for Children, Schools and
Families, recognises company community programmes that raise the
achievement of young people through building sustainable
partnerships with schools in the UK to benefit pupils.
Pinsent Masons has developed its relationship with Cockburn
College in line with the overall theme for its community investment
programme, 'inspiring young lives'. The relationship with
Cockburn was established over five years ago, beginning with a
commitment to literacy and numeracy mentoring and has broadened
based on the theme of 'helping children to achieve their
potential'. In order to do this, staff have supported school
enterprise days, and organised visits to the firm's offices,
including guided tours and careers talks to the students.
Jonathan Fortnam of Pinsent Masons commented:
"We are delighted that our work with Cockburn has been
recognised by this prestigious award. This comes at a time
when we are hoping to expand the relationship further through an
arts based photography project inspired by our specialist in house
facilities and printing teams, and as Business Language Champions
where we hope to use our status as an international firm to
encourage the study of foreign languages to a recognised academic
level. The programme works because we have developed a relationship
of trust with the School, the teachers and students."
The Big Tick
The Big Tick is awarded to
companies able to demonstrate excellence in the way that they
organise and integrate their responsible business practices and who
can show a positive impact both on society and on the business.
The decision to award the Big Tick was made by a panel of
independent, experienced practitioners, and as such is both hard
won (only 39% of applicants are successful), and highly
prestigious.
Stephen Howard, Chief Executive, Business in the Community
said:
“I congratulate all the winners of a Big Tick this year. It is
fantastic to see so many strong examples of responsible business
practice. The Big Tick is now recognised as both a valuable and
difficult award to achieve. It means a company has demonstrated
ways in which they positively make a difference to the environment,
their workplace, the community or in the marketplace in which they
sell, advertise or trade.
Those who achieve the Big Tick are leading companies, ones that
run their businesses aware that they depend above all on the
talent, innovation and loyalty of their people. They know that they
cannot build a successful sustainable business without constantly
showing their commitment to being a better business.
Business in the Community mobilises business for good. The
Awards for Excellence is our annual benchmark of the very best. It
is reassuring to see such a high standard in all the Big Tick
winners this year.”
