International law firm Pinsent Masons today announces that, following a vote of the firm's partners, John Cleland has been elected as Managing Partner of the firm, effective from 1 May 2015.

John joined the firm as a partner in 1997 and is currently Head of Financial Institutions (covering banking, restructuring and financial regulatory).  During his tenure the firm's reputation in the financial services sector has grown significantly, with the firm winning panel places for many of the largest banks and insurers operating in the UK and developing its international capability. John's management has been characterised in particular by a commitment to innovation in service delivery and the use of technology to deliver solutions for clients.

Managing Partner Elect John Cleland says:

"It is a tremendous honour to be entrusted with the Managing Partner role by my peers. Pinsent Masons is a firm which has made significant strides during some very challenging times, balancing investment in international expansion with robust financial performance. The firm is now entering a crucial period in which profitable growth will be the key to our continued success. I look forward to working with Richard Foley and the senior management team towards achieving our vision of becoming an international market leader in the global sectors in which we operate, namely advanced manufacturing and technology, energy, financial services and infrastructure."

Senior Partner Richard Foley says:

"We were very fortunate to have three such strong contenders for the Managing Partner role and all three deserve great credit for the way in which the election has been conducted. I'm sure John will make a cracking MP and I look forward to working with him as we seek to capitalise on the many opportunities that lie ahead of our business."

Managing Partner David Ryan says:

"My congratulations to John and I am delighted to be handing over the reins to him. John has without doubt the strengths and capabilities required of the role. I'm looking forward to helping him to make the transition and continuing to work with him in the senior leadership team."
