Breakthrough on Unitary Patent Package
After more then 30 years it now seems that the unitary patent will finally become a reality with the EPO expected to issue the first unitary patents in April 2014.
On 19 November, political agreement was reached on an amended text of the Regulation implementing enhanced cooperation in the area of the creation of unitary patent protection (Unitary Patent Regulation). The compromise text, proposed by Cyprus, which currently holds the presidency ofthe Council of the European Union, was approved by diplomatic representatives of each of the 27 Member States involved in the process and broadly supported by the Committee of Legal Affairs of the European Parliament (JURI) in an extraordinary meeting.
