Ethnicity pay reporting
The government has launched a consultation today on Ethnicity pay reporting. The foreword to the consultation states "This is not just about the economy; tackling inequality of opportunity in the workplace is also about social justice". The consultation also refers to the McGregor-Smith review into race at work and a follow-up report, Race at work 2018 scorecard report: the McGregor-Smith Review one year on has also been published today by Business In The Community. That report records that only 11% of the employers surveyed are currently collecting data on their ethnicity pay gaps.
As well as coinciding with the pay gap consultation launch, the report flags that 25% of BAME employees reported that they had witnessed or experienced racist harassment or bullying from managers in the last two years, and many of the measures assessed in the scorecard show no change from the 2015 position.
Baroness McGregor-Smith comments in the report:
"We can’t change what we don’t measure and listening to the voices of employees is critical to make sure we make the right change. These findings show there is still a lot of work to be done if we are to achieve true equality for BAME people in the workplace in our lifetime. Over half of BAME employees feeling like they need to leave their jobs in order to progress is unacceptable and we must ensure society and business retains this rich source of skills and talent."
The report sets out practical suggestions for how organisations can improve, including making diversity a KPI; training on unconscious bias; and challenging university and school bias.
We have worked with numerous clients on gender pay gap reporting and contextualising the data. Our Diversity & Inclusion Consultancy Brook Graham is also expert in these areas. Please contact us for more information.
