Russia, Ukraine & Former Soviet Union

Russia, Ukraine and the Former Soviet Union States (FSU) are sources of significant opportunity for both domestic and international business. High-quality local and international commercial legal advice is essential when taking advantage of the emerging opportunities in these rapidly growing economies whilst mitigating any potential risks of the changing legal environments.

We have over 20 years experience advising on transactions, projects and disputes concerning Russia, Ukraine and the FSU region, providing domestic clients as well as foreign investors with practical commercial advice as they seek to take advantage of inbound and outbound global opportunities. The team specialises in advising companies on English and European law.

Our Russian and Ukraine core team comprises 10 native language speakers from the FSU, two of whom are Russian qualified and one is Ukrainian qualified. This allows us not only to have language and cultural understanding but also the practicalities of business on the ground in the FSU.

Our dedicated multi-location Russian and Ukraine team combines the expertise of over 50 lawyers from our international offices in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, comprising common- and civil- law qualified Russian, Ukrainian and Kazakh natives who are fluent in the languages. This gives us an in-depth understanding of the legal issues and business culture of the region, ensuring that nothing is lost in translation. Trusted relationships with leading independent firms allow us to assist with domestic regional law, and provide a cost-effective, flexible solution to transactions in the region.

Our team has particular expertise, and a proven track record, in advising clients on all legal aspects of commerce, including stock market listings, corporate finance, private wealth, property portfolio management, dispute resolution, and immigration and employment issues, They are supported by the full range of practice areas including tax, energy, projects, infrastructure, and competition.

Uniquely for a 'city corporate firm' we have a Private Wealth team. We recognise that the wealth creators in Growth Economies (such as those Russia, Ukraine and the FSU) have specific needs from their legal service providers - from corporate finance and commercial property to immigration and matrimonial. Our team works closely with the Private Wealth lawyers to cater for all our clients' needs in their chosen language.

More than legal advice

In addition to being trusted legal advisers to our clients, we act as a commercial partner assisting investors on FSU projects and advising FSU entities looking to grow internationally.

We draw upon our extensive network of trusted professional advisers – such as bankers, accountants and consultants – to support our clients in getting business done efficiently and successfully. We understand the risks and rewards for our clients, and work hard to make trading across borders easy.
