Universities: Creating a culture of active performance management
Our Employment team is working with a number of universities to deliver an innovative and structured approach to performance management.
Our approach breaks down barriers to management intervention and gets managers and HR working collectively to deal with cases consistently and robustly. We begin by cascading a tailored training programme to small groups of managers to develop a shared understanding of how performance issues can be tackled and the benefits of early intervention, with practical guidance on objective setting and review.
Our "bolder and better" approach to legal risk highlights how cases could be dealt with robustly, avoiding drawn out processes and delay. These sessions are swiftly followed by case review meetings with managers and HR to put the principles into practice on live cases and establish clear action plans. By anticipating challenges and planning how to tackle them, we ensure that managers feel prepared and in control. We build consistency by sharing lessons learned and effective practice.
By building confidence and engaging managers in a structured framework of HR and legal support, we help to create a culture of effective intervention and a platform for lasting improvements in institutional performance.
