Shale Gas and Fracking in the UK

It is clear that shale gas is going to play a large part in the future of the UK energy mix. New Petroleum Exploration and Development Licences (PEDLs) have been awarded by the Oil and Gas Authority, following the conclusion of the 14th onshore oil and gas licensing round. Now industry is seeking out and exploring new opportunities against a backdrop of government support.

Recent developments in England have included industry commitments on community benefits, the announcement of a new ‘Shale Wealth Fund’ and a joint policy statement issued by the former Department for Energy & Climate Change (DECC) and the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), the aim of which is to ensure an efficient and certain planning process that delivers timely decisions and works effectively for both developers and the local community.

Pinsent Masons' dedicated Shale Gas & Fracking Group is actively involved with developments.
