Stuart is a Partner and head of the Tax Disputes and Investigations Team. He has extensive experience of working with large FTSE 100 clients in resolving disputes with HMRC across all indirect and direct taxes. Stuart has represented clients at all stages of the appeal process from the First-tier Tribunal (Tax) through to the Supreme Court, before the Administrative Court and the Court of Justice of the European Union (formerly the European Court of Justice). Stuart is also a key partner in the Tax Team’s indirect tax advisory practice and is a member of the VAT Practitioner’s Group.
In Chambers UK 2016 clients said Stuart combines “technical expertise with a refreshingly down-to-earth style,” according to sources. Others say “you always feel that you get clear, concise advice,” and that he is a “very good technician”.
In Legal 500 2015 clients said Stuart “combines vast experience of litigating with technical brilliance and strong tax knowledge” and possesses “strong client-care skills.” A client interviewed for Chambers and Partners in 2014 stated that Stuart “has vast experience of litigating, technical brilliance and knowledge of tax, and the ‘soft touch’ with the clients, who trust him implicitly – in my experience that’s the holy trinity for tax litigators.”
