China Belt & Road Initiative - Arbitration in Africa

This seminar will be covering the latest developments in arbitration in South Africa, with a focus on the Belt and Road Initiative ("BRI") and its impact on the arbitration market in Africa. The Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa ("AFSA") and the China-Africa Joint Arbitration Centre ("CAJAC") will both be visiting Pinsent Masons in Paris, and their experts will be involved in our seminar.

In a series of panel discussions, you will have the chance to engage with leading arbitration specialists who will be covering hot topics regarding arbitration in Africa in light of the BRI. These topics include:

  • South Africa: a dynamic regional hub for dispute resolution
  • AFSA's involvement in building the CAJAC project
  • Which arbitral institution should handle BRI disputes?
  • AFSA's involvement in standardising and harmonising arbitral practices in the South African Development Community ("SADC") countries
  • Room for ADR?
  • The types of disputes which may arise in relation to BRI projects in Africa: investment or commercial arbitrations?
  • Which seat is appropriate for BRI disputes?
  • Why BRI disputes concern French contractors
