John Cleland
Managing Partner
John has overall responsibility for the day-to-day management and operations of the firm globally.
Previously a banking lawyer, John had over 25 years’ experience advising some of the world’s largest financial institutions on secured and unsecured lending and specialised in complex structured finance transactions.
Since taking up the role of Managing Partner of the firm in 2015, John has played a pivotal role in the firm’s programme of rapid internationalisation. During his time in office, the firm has balanced market-leading financial performance with sustained investment, with the firm opening bases in Sydney, Melbourne, Dusseldorf, Madrid, Dublin and Frankfurt. Under his stewardship the firm has also been named Law Firm of the Year by both Legal Week (2016), Legal Business (2016, 2019), The Lawyer (2018) and is regularly counted among the most innovative law firms in Europe by the Financial Times. John takes a particular interest in mental health and wellbeing at work and leads the firm's programmes in this area.
