Andrew McMillan, Partner at Pinsent Masons, explores the importance of alliances, innovation and the data economy
Europe's fastest-growing advanced manufacturing and technology (AMT) companies are among the most innovative and exciting businesses in the world. They are achieving rapid rates of growth, scaling more quickly than their competitors and creating new economic value at pace.
This survey examines what these businesses do differently from their rivals. It is part of Pinsent Masons' wider Pacesetters project, a landmark initiative that aims to better understand what is driving Europe's fastest-growing companies across a range of industries.
In the case of the AMT sector, this report is based on exclusive interviews conducted with 100 senior executives of fast-growing businesses from across Western Europe and from several different sub-sectors. Clearly, these are diverse and disparate enterprises -yet the characteristics they share help define what it takes to deliver fast growth in AMT today.
These are businesses marked out by a determination to innovate, seeking new technology, talent and tools to constantly renew their product and service offering - and even to re-engineer their business models. They are businesses driven by data, making decisions with the use of sophisticated analytics rather than instinct, and monetising their data for further growth. And they are businesses that believe in the power of collaboration, whether through M&A or less formal partnerships.
The AMT sector faces challenges - not least from political uncertainties across the globe - but these businesses are confident about their future. Pacesetters provides a snapshot of what is driving the optimism of fast-growing AMT businesses; we hope it will help other firms follow their example.
