Pinsent Masons advises EDF power solutions on its acquisition of strategic stake in Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm

13 Oct 2026 | 12:58 pm |

Multinational law firm Pinsent Masons has advised long-standing client EDF power solutions on its acquisition of a 33.3% interest in the Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm project from RWE, marking a significant addition to EDF power solutions’ UK offshore wind development portfolio.

Five Estuaries is a proposed offshore wind farm located off the Essex and Suffolk coast with an anticipated generating capacity of approximately 1.1GW. The project has already secured its Development Consent Order and represents a strategically important element of the UK's renewable energy pipeline, with the potential to make a significant contribution to future energy security and decarbonisation objectives.

The acquisition sees EDF power solutions join the Five Estuaries shareholder consortium alongside Sumitomo, ESB and incoming shareholder Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), reinforcing EDF power solutions’ commitment to the development of large-scale offshore renewable energy infrastructure in the UK.

The Pinsent Masons team was led by Corporate Energy Partner Brian Thumath and Legal Director Ciaran Wilkinson and supported by Associates Scott Blain and Emma Trainor, working with a team of colleagues from across the firm's corporate, competition, tax, projects, property, energy and regulatory teams.

Commenting on the acquisition, Brian Thumath said: “On the back of Gwynt Glas, we are delighted to have supported EDF power solutions on another strategically important investment in UK offshore wind and in the Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm project. We congratulate EDF power solutions on reaching completion and wish all partners in Five Estuaries every success with the continued development of the project in the years ahead.”
