Jonathan Burton: How Curiosity Can Redefine an In‑House Career Path

Our 2025 white paper posed the question, “Why are lawyers underrepresented in CEO roles?” The response to the publication was so overwhelmingly positive that the team decided to continue the conversation. We launched an interview series with Heads of Legal and General Counsel to explore what it truly takes to step out of one’s comfort zone and progress up the in-house career ladder. Although these legal leaders offered a wide range of perspectives, common themes emerged throughout their stories: pushing past fear and remaining open to the new and unknown.

In this latest interview in our in-house legal series, we’re joined by Jonathan Burton, VP, Legal Services, at Robert Bosch UK Holdings Limited

Head of Legal, Bosch

It's a challenge to overcome the perceptions that you're just a lawyer, but you can still bring your legal knowledge with you.
The challenge of shifting perceptions shaped Jonathan's journey into a non‑traditional legal role; demonstrating that lawyers can contribute far more than risk assessment and technical expertise. He navigated the discomfort of stepping into unfamiliar territory by adopting a growth mindset, embracing continuous learning, and seeking cross‑functional knowledge to widen their strategic understanding.

A recurring challenge was resisting the pull of “the legal weeds” and instead developing the ability to think and operate at a broader, business‑wide level. Jonathan also faced internal pressure to balance legal risk instinct with commercial ambition, ensuring it never limited their ability to drive the business forward.

Ultimately, Jonathan's advice to others is grounded in reframing self‑perception: see yourself first as a business leader with legal skills, not the other way around. He strongly advocates cultivating deep curiosity, investing in personal and professional development, and building a trusted network of mentors and colleagues. In conclusion, John encourages in‑house lawyers to embrace discomfort, demonstrate measurable value, and prioritise human connection as the foundation of effective leadership.
