We’re inviting interested applicants to meet us prior to submitting an application by joining one of our events. Details of all upcoming events can be found in our events calendar. Events will be delivered by the Pinsent Masons graduate team or in conjunction with third party partners.

If you’ve any other questions relating to this programme, take a look through these frequently asked questions. If you still have a question, please don't hesitate to contact the team.

  • I'm completing a law degree. Does it matter what modules I choose?

We don’t stipulate that you need to study particular modules as part of your undergraduate studies. However, we’d expect that students who’re keen on a career in commercial law will take the opportunity to further their knowledge in this area through choosing relevant modules, if/when the opportunity arises.

  • My previous application to Pinsent Masons was unsuccessful, can I re-apply?

You can't apply for a Training Contract in the same year your Vacation Placement application was unsuccessful.

It is very important that you consider why your initial application was unsuccessful before you re-apply.

Subsequent applications need to demonstrate how you've developed since making your first application. Historically, a number of candidates who’ve re-applied have been successful but the majority are not. In many cases this is because their application does not show any significant improvement from their initial application.

  • I'm completing a law degree with a year abroad. When can I apply for vacation placements?

You can apply in your penultimate year of study. We conduct interviews using MS Teams for candidates if they’re overseas at the time of the assessment centre for Vacation Placements.

  • How many applications do you receive?

On average we receive about 2,500 applications for Vacation Placements and an additional 1,500 applications for Training Contracts. Competition is fierce, with those candidates who best evidence the skills and attributes we are looking for being shortlisted for assessment.

  • Do you offer feedback on applications?

Due to the significant number of applications we receive, we are unfortunately not able to offer feedback to applicants who are unsuccessful at the application stage.

  • I don't meet your minimum academic requirement, can I still apply?

We review all applications holistically, taking account of candidates’ academic achievements, work experience and extra-curricular activities. However, law is an intellectually demanding career and we’re looking to recruit candidates who can evidence intellectual capability. If you have mitigating circumstances that have impacted negatively on your results then we’ll consider these when reviewing your application. There is an opportunity for you to include this information in your application form. If you’d prefer to discuss in more detail prior to making an application, please contact us at [email protected].

  • I don't have A-Level qualifications, but I gained equivalent qualifications. Will you still consider my application?

Yes, please specify your grades and, where possible, please include the grading scale applied to the qualifications to allow us to assess your performance to date.

  • Is it advantageous to complete a masters degree e.g. LLM before applying?

The vast majority of our Trainees have not undertaken any post-graduate study other than the GDL and/or LPC; SQE or Diploma in Legal Practice.

While a Masters level qualification may enhance your subject-matter knowledge in a given area, we don't feel it will necessarily provide or enhance the skills needed to be a successful Trainee.

  • Do I need previous legal work experience to apply?

    The short answer is no.

Legal work experience will, undoubtedly, help you to develop the knowledge and skills required for a career in law. However, non-legal work experience, other roles and life experiences can help you to develop the skills and competencies we are looking for. You should include the examples which best evidence your skill-set in your application.

  • What if I need a work permit?

Our Vacation Placement and Training Contract offers are conditional upon receipt of confirmation of your right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the Vacation Placement and/or Training Contract.

The firm encourages Trainee Solicitors to make use of the Graduate Visa route where it is available to them.

This will be discussed with applicants on an individual basis at the time of offer.
