Pinsent Masons has advised International Power on the acquisition of the rights to develop an onshore wind farm on the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland. Beinn Mhor wind farm will have an installed capacity of up to 140MW which could provide around 100,000 homes with wind generated electricity.
International Power, 70% owned by GDF SUEZ, is set to develop and operate the 39 turbine wind farm by 2016. Preliminary engineering work is already underway and construction is expected to begin by 2013. Committed to improving the security of supply to the islands off Scotland, the company project supports the Western Isles transmission link to be commissioned in 2015.
Steve Riley, CEO & President of IPR-GDF SUEZ UK-Europe, commented, "This project is a positive step for us in developing a major wind portfolio in Scotland. It will provide a significant boost to the local economy as well as help to secure future UK energy supply from renewable sources."
The Pinsent Masons team advising International Power was led by Corporate Partner Farook Khan, Corporate Legal Director Gary MacDonald, Property Partner Nicholas Shenken and Planning and Environmental Partner Gordon McCreath.
Commenting on the deal Farook said, "We are delighted to have advised International Power on such a strategic acquisition. This complex transaction is another example of the increasing maturity of the renewable energy sector and Pinsent Masons' expertise in this important market."
