Penny's experience

  • Advised a large UK construction services provider, on a lengthy employer compliance, construction industry scheme (CIS) and IR35 review with HMRC. Work involved assessing business risks, assisting with disclosure of any identified errors, and enhancing compliance processes in relation to both IR35 and CIS.

  • Advised a corporate trustee business on its exposure to tax (including IR35) and reputational risks due to its engagement structure for professional trustees. Delivered advice through tax reports and Board presentations. Collaborated with the employment team to restructure the engagement model, implementing a new contractual agreement to avoid personal service companies.

  • Advised a financial services company, on the creation of a tool to assist its onboarding processes to manage IR35 tax risks.

  • Advised and supported a luxury travel company to undertake a tax risk governance review and implement a comprehensive compliance programme in respect of the corporate tax criminal offences in the Criminal Finances Act 2017.

  • Designing a tool for use by a leading insurance company, to assist in identifying suppliers that may fall within the scope of the IR35 rules.

  • Advised Taylor Hopkinson Limited, a Glasgow-based recruitment partner to global renewable energy leaders, on its majority sale to Brunel International BV. Brunel has an option to acquire the remaining shares after three years.

  • Acted for a leading global bank against claims for the repayment of an early redemption fee. This litigation featured complex issues of German banking law.

  • Advised and supported a large construction company to undertake an extensive risk assessment in relation to the corporate criminal tax offences in the Criminal Finances Act to enable the business to introduce new/enhanced controls to manage its risk exposure and prevent the facilitation of tax evasion.

  • Advised and supported a major football club to implement reasonable procedures to prevent the facilitation of tax evasion as required by the corporate criminal tax offences in the Criminal Finances Act 2017.
