Downloading via a dial-up connection potentially wastes £1,188 a year compared to broadband and a heavy internet user could watch all 72 World Cup games with the time saved by switching to broadband, according to a study.

More than one third of UK internet households are still wasting valuable time and money by not switching to broadband according to uSwitch.com, a price comparison service.

The company calculates that broadband could save dial-up users an average of 54 hours of wasted time, for as little as £2 extra per month. But a die-hard downloader could be wasting over 108 hours a year by not connecting to a broadband package.
