According to a report by ZD Net UK, the UK Information Commissioner is warning that a new tool called Demailer that lets users of IBM/Lotus Domino Notes to retrieve unread e-mail from a recipient’s inbox could be in breach of the law against unauthorised interception laid down in the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 and against principles of data protection law.

Similar tools allows senders to recall unread e-mail from an inbox on the same server. According to ZD Net, the Information Commissioner considers this practice “not unreasonable.” However, for Lotus Domino Notes, the new IBM/Lotus Demailer goes one step further, enabling retrieval from remote servers, provided the recipient is also a user of Domino.
