Fingerprint login to be available for the first time for UK mobile banking

Fingerprint login technology will be available for mobile banking customers in the UK for the first time on Thursday.

The technology is being incorporated into mobile banking app services provided by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and NatWest and will be available to customers that bank using certain Apple smartphone devices.

"Using Apple's new Touch ID fingerprint sensor, RBS and NatWest customers who have an iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus will be able to access their mobile banking app within seconds," RBS said in a statement. "The technology recognises the customer's unique finger print, meaning they don't have to remember a tricky passcode - making it easier and more convenient to access their finances."

RBS said the banks were responding to customer demand for fingerprint login technology. It said more than three million customers use the RBS and NatWest mobile banking app every week and that 1.8m of its mobile banking app users use the Apple devices compatible with the new fingerprint login facility.

Stuart Haire, managing director, RBS and NatWest Direct Bank said: "There has been a revolution in banking, as more and more of our customers are using digital technology to bank with us. Adding Touch ID to our mobile banking app makes it even easier and more convenient for customers to manage their finances on the move and directly responds to their requests."
