Most employers monitor internet and e-mail use by employees

According to a new report by employment research company, Industrial Relations Services, more than two-thirds of employers monitor their staff’s e-mail and internet use.

77% of employers in the survey monitored which sites were visited by employees; 55% monitored both this and e-mail correspondence.

Industrial Relations Services are reportedly calling for clarification of the laws governing the internet.

While there are grey areas in the law relating to the monitoring of e-mail and internet usage, the best practice for any employer intending to do so is to advise employees in advance that monitoring will take place.
