The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) yesterday said that it has dropped a copyright infringement lawsuit against major ISPs that were linking to an unauthorised music download service based in China because the service has shutdown.

The record labels, including Universal, Sony, BMG and Warner Brothers, last Friday sued the ISPs, including AT&T Broadband, Cable and Wireless, Sprint, Advanced Network Services and a unit of WorldCom, arguing that they must stop their users accessing the Listen4ever.com web site which acted as a central location for the download of thousands of songs.

The RIAA said in a statement that it was prepared to take further legal action, if Listen4ever, which has been inaccessible since Monday, reappears with a different name, or in a different location.
