The survey was conducted by Strathclyde University's Fraser of Allander Institute. Lex Gold, Director of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce said:
“The results of the survey show that a majority of businesses have and are using e-mail facilities and that more than half have a web site. The manufacturing sector leads the way with 77% of businesses questioned communicating electronically both internally and externally. The picture is similar in the wholesale distribution and construction sectors where again the majority use e-mail for communicating and both showing significant increases over the previous quarter. Manufacturing also leads the way in allowing customers and clients to order electronically (37%).”
“It is clear from these results that while we are moving generally in the right direction there is still considerable scope to establish business to business dealing over the Internet and it is significant that very few of the businesses questioned are receiving payments electronically.”
