A brief text message can immobilise two models of Siemens mobile phone, the result of what appears to be a software bug. CNET News.com quotes a spokesman for the company who admitted that the company is aware of the problem.

It appears that the problem occurs upon opening any text message that consists of a single word from the phone's language menu preceded by a percentage sign or asterisk (reports differ on the character) and surrounded by quotation marks, such as "%English".

The affected models are the Siemens 35 series and the 45 series. The former is completely disabled when the bug is triggered; the latter just results in a two minute read delay.
