US Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky has announced a "networked world trade initiative" that aims to harmonise international rules for e-commerce to ensure fair competition.

The plan, according to Barshefsky, is to give e-businesses “the same guarantees of freedom, fair competition, respect for intellectual property rights, and access to markets that more conventional commerce enjoys,” in addition to protecting consumers, offering incentives to innovation and integrating open markets.

The initiative is expected to be explained in detail at a forthcoming meeting of the World Trade Organisation in addition to being put to other international trade groups.
