US trade mark owners invited to pre-register .us domain names

Anyone with an existing or pending US trade mark has until 9th April to register their mark as a domain name with the extension .us in advance of the domain being opened to the public on a first come, first served basis from 24th April.

To avoid problems of the kind faced by NeuLevel, the .biz registry, the .us registry, NeuStar, will compare each of the domain name applications with valid trade mark names on file at the US Patent and Trademark Office. When .biz names were opened to trade mark owners, several thousand fraudulent applications were made, causing expensive problems for NeuLevel.

During the so-called Sunrise process for trade mark owners, it is expected that there will be more than one applicant for the same domain name. Accordingly, between 10th April and 23rd April, NeuStar will be operating a “Random Selection Process” to select one registrant from the list of qualified applicants. Again learning from problems faced by NeuLevel, NeuStar will ensure that only one application per applicant is eligible for the random draw.

The .biz registry faced a lawsuit alleging that it operated an illegal lottery. Applicants submitted numerous applications for the same name to increase their chances of winning the name in the event of random selection.
