International law firm Pinsent Masons has been awarded ‘Energy & Infrastructure Team of the Year’ at the Legal Business Awards 2018.
Pinsent Masons was recognised for its work for Ebbsfleet Development Corporation on the Garden City project in North Kent, working with UK Power Networks and UK Government to create a mechanism that allowed forward funding of energy infrastructure, yet simultaneously created a legal mechanism to recover the investment. This had never been undertaken previously in the UK, and is the first time a public body has invested to unlock development and forward fund electricity infrastructure ahead of need.
Peter Feehan, partner at Pinsent Masons, led the firm's work on the project. On the award win, he comments:
"It's a great compliment to be recognised for our energy and infrastructure work by the Legal Business Awards for the third time since 2014, and testament to the expertise within the team. The Ebbsfleet Garden City project represents a major step forward in unlocking an avenue to investment, one without a solution since electricity sector privatisation in 1989. Since completion, our solution has been developed into a "pathfinder" project for UK Government, forming the blueprint for delivering utility infrastructure across all major UK projects."
Now in their 21st year, the Legal Business Awards recognise outstanding work across the legal profession, and were judged by an expert panel comprising senior in-house counsel from a range of industries.
