How to understand the impact of microaggressions on individuals, and ensure that conversations about race are able to take place in a manner that is respectful and inclusive in professional settings.

Following the Lady Hussey incident in late 2022, where the late Queen’s lady-in-waiting repeatedly pressed black British charity boss Ngozi Fulani on where she was “really” from, significant discourse took place around how people should be talking about race in a professional setting; what is acceptable in terms of conversations about race and ethnicity, and what is the impact of asking people about their heritage?

We are keen to ensure that these important conversations around race and ethnicity continue, but in an inclusive and considerate manner. The focus of this session will be on how to have conversations about race, ethnicity, culture and heritage within the workplace sensitively, without causing offence.

Natasha (Brook Graham) will explore why some people may be reluctant to discuss their own heritage, what the proper etiquette is for asking a colleague or business contact about their background. We want people to understand the impact of microaggressions on individuals and ensure that conversations about race are able to take place in a manner that allows both parties to be comfortable.

Who should attend?

Anyone, but particularly EDI and HR professionals, Allies, network group members.
