Should you protect a monopoly in your green innovation or share it for mutual benefit?

Businesses came together globally to share information and innovation around vaccines and antivirals to tackle the health emergency. If climate change is the next emergency, should sharing of innovation on a similar scale happen in relation to new green technology?

This session will examine the ‘innovation monopoly’ versus ‘innovation sharing’ dilemma for businesses responding to the challenges of climate change and sustainability by developing new technology. We will discuss the pros and cons of each approach, consider how to address any disincentive to innovate and the need to recoup investment in R&D, and explore whether there might be a more commercially acceptable hybrid approach somewhere between the two extremes.
