Apple Computer Inc. is suing an individual who posted pictures of its dual-processor G4 computer and its Apple Pro mouse on the internet up to 5 months before their official launch.

The lawsuit, filed in a Californian court, seeks a court order to prevent further disclosure of Apple’s trade secrets in addition to damages.

This case is an example of the problems that can arise with the leakage of trade secrets. Such confidential information is particularly important where it provides its owner with a commercial advantage over competitors. As it is valuable only insofar as it retains its confidentiality, confidential information must at all times be safeguarded. Once disclosed, it loses its value and infringement is extremely difficult to prove.
