Australia begins process of procuring A$1bn in regional rail upgrades

Australia's Victorian state government has opened expressions of interest (EOIs) for the second stage of the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds rail upgrade.
EOIs for the project will close on 31 March.
The project includes duplicating eight kilometres of railway track, upgrading signalling system from South Geelong to Waurn Ponds and level crossing removals at Fyans Street and Surf Coast Highway to reduce congestion.
It is a part of over A$1 billion investment in rail upgrades between Geelong and Waurn Ponds, which is planned to deliver a more frequent and reliable train services for South Geelong, Marshall and Waurn Ponds passengers.
The Australian and Victorian governments have also respectively committed A$2 billion to stage one of the Geelong Fast Rail project, which will reduce travel times between Geelong and Melbourne to 50 minutes.
Eliza Danby at Pinsent Masons, the law firm behind Out-Law, said:” this is a major upgrade that will ultimately feed into Geelong fast rail, a key component of the state’s regional rail revival program.”
