The area between the Taunton suburb of Cometrowe and the village of Trowe, to the south west of Taunton, was identified as "a broad location for a mixed-use strategic urban extension … for between 1,000 and 2,000 dwellings" in Taunton Deane Borough Council's local plan core strategy.
Planning and design consultants Barton Willmore confirmed this week that they have submitted a planning application to the Council, on behalf of the developers, for the construction of "a new 'Garden Community'" on 116 hectares of land in the area.
The plans include two neighbourhoods separated by "a large strategic 'Green Wedge'", for which a new community park has been proposed. The neighbourhoods would contain up to 2,000 new homes, including "up to 500 homes for shared ownership or rent", Barton Willmore said.
The scheme has also proposed a local centre with shops and community facilities, a new primary school, sports pitches and a 'Park and Ride' scheme.
"This proposal seeks to provide a new sustainable community which sits comfortably in its rural context and reflects the distinctive character of Taunton and nearby villages," said Barton Willmore urban design director Kevin Parker in a statement. "It will provide homes for people at all stages of life along with employment opportunities within walkable distances."
