Just over half (51%) of UK businesses expect their spend on on-line activities to increase in the next 12 months and 18% expect this increase to be considerable, according to a new report on e-commerce from Continental Research.

The figures also show only 42% of businesses have their own web site. This figure breaks down as:

35% of small businesses (£50,000 to £500,000 turnover) have a site;
65% of medium businesses (£500,000 - £5 million);
86% of large businesses (over £5 million)

Overall, only 10% of businesses said their IT and telecoms budgets for the coming year would reduce, 65% said it would stay the same and 25% said it would increase.

Also, 14% of businesses expected their spend on outsourcing and contractors to increase, 68% said it would stay the same and 18% anticipated a decline.

The report was based on data collected from 500 interviews conducted during May 2003 with the person responsible for financial matters within companies.
