“Housebuilder Galliford Try has been awarded a £17 million grant by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to help build more than 1,500 affordable rent homes, according to a report in Building.

The grant was awarded under the Government's flagship Affordable Homes Programme (AHP) and makes Galliford Try the third private developer to sign an AHP deal with the HCA.

The grant is the second  to be awarded to Galliford Try from the HCA. The first was awarded to provide support for first time buyers under the Government's FirstBuy programme, which facilitates the purchased of new properties by first time buyers through  an equity loan scheme.

The total value of the contracts and grants awarded under the AHP is now over £1.4 billion out of a  total of £1.8bn that the HCA will use to aid the delivery of affordable homes. AHP is the

Government's flagship initiative to  increase the supply of new affordable homes in England.

The Government will invest £4.5bn in affordable housing through the AHP and existing commitments made under  the previous National Affordable Housing Programme.

The HCA expects the delivery of 80,000 new homes through grants and contracts awarded.
