The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has invited submissions on the quality and regulation of private rented housing and rent levels within the sector.

Interested parties have been invited to make submissions to a Select Committee considering issues such as the quality of private rented housing and how it can be ensured that housing in the sector is of an acceptable standard; levels of rent within the sector, including the possibility of rent control and the interaction between housing benefits and rent; and the regulation of landlords and letting agents.

The DCLG Select Committee is also likely to examine the regulation of houses in multiple occupation, including the use by local authorities of discretionary licensing schemes; tenancy agreements, including the length and security of tenure; and the use of private rented housing by local authorities to deal with homelessness.

The inquiry follows the Government's announcement last month of a £10 billion debt guarantee scheme set up to enable private rented housing providers to raise a debt with a Government guarantee and to give assurance to investors.

The deadline for making a submission to the committee is 17 January 2013.
