The Council's planning sub-committee resolved to grant planning permission to the proposals by Plough Yard Developments at a meeting last week. Under the plans, the Curtain Road site will be redeveloped into a 40-storey residential tower to comprise 385 flats as well as two office blocks reaching nine and 13 storeys and space for shops.
The scheme, to be called 'The Stage', will be centred around public exhibition space showing the remains of the Shakespearean Curtain Theatre; which was discovered last year during an archaeological dig. The space will also include a 200-seat outdoor auditorium.
The proposals for the scheme did not include any on-site affordable housing provision, however, the Council's planning officers said in the committee report (80-page / 504KB PDF) that the developer had offered an "exceptional financial contribution" of £3million towards the provision of off-site affordable housing.
Final planning permission will be subject to referral of the application to the Mayor of London and to the completion of a Section 106 Agreement.
