Kensington and Chelsea demands section 106 contribution for domestic extension

A couple proposing to build a 900 square metre basement extension to their home in west London's Ladbroke Grove have been granted planning permission subject to a £825,000 contribution towards affordable housing, according to the Financial Times .

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea granted permission to the proposals, which include the creation of two underground floors at the property, last month. Because of the scale of the extension, it has asked for the section 106 contribution of £825,000 towards the provision of affordable housing elsewhere in the borough.

The Council's Core Strategy sets out a requirement that developments which provide more than 800 sq m of residential floorspace are required to provide affordable housing.

According to the reports, property agent CBRE's head of planning Stuart Robinson said that the requirement was "completely off the scale". "You don't normally get these agreements with residential applications," he said.
