The project will comprise 470 flats in a 45-storey tower as well a new 150-180 capacity theatre and cafe for the Southwark Playhouse. It is designed by architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. The scheme is located on a 1.2 acre public site owned by the Greater London Authority which previously housed the London Park Hotel.
The development is part of the Mayor's wider strategy to release public land for development; create more jobs and affordable housing, and deliver economic growth in London. It is one of several major projects aimed at creating a town centre with improved transport links and better community facilities for the local residents.
"(This project) ... will be central to helping Elephant and Castle realise its enormous potential for growth and regeneration and so I’m delighted to ask developers to step forward and make it happen," said Johnson.
"We’re looking for a developer with the know-how, financial clout and the ambition that this fantastic project deserves and that will help to make this historic part of London an even better place to live, work and visit," he said.
"Momentum and confidence has returned to the project with great progress being made over the last few years and I look forward to proposals coming forward and for construction to start," said Southwark Council leader Peter John.
Other major projects planned as part of the £1.5 billion Elephant & Castle regeneration include the Heygate Estate redevelopment, Elephant & Castle Leisure Centre, Oakmayne Plaza and a new shopping centre. The regeneration will deliver 5,000 new and replacement homes and also aims to make the area a key destination for leisure and shopping.
Developers can submit their expressions of interest until 22 October 2012.
