US authorities are demanding that foreign postal services forward advance details as to the origin and destination of all parcels being sent to the US, according to civil liberties group European Digital Rights.

The proposals, according to EDRi, will give the US time to check the information against their databases before the parcels reach their destination, and to intercept the packages if necessary.

The group quotes an article from Austrian on-line magazine Futurezone. Speaking to Futurezone, German data protection watchdog Peter Schaar said that he had strongly protested the request and that European regulators would debate the issue next month.
