Peel to submit plans for 3,000-home Trafford Waters scheme

Developer Peel Land and Property has announced that it intends to submit plans this month for a mixed-use development on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Greater Manchester.

The proposed Trafford Waters scheme, to be built on a site near to the Intu Trafford Centre and Trafford Leisure Village, would comprise a new neighbourhood with up to 3,000 apartments, including family homes, and more than 81,000 square metres of commercial floorspace.

The plans include nearly 70,000 sq m of office space and around 11,000 sq m of small shops, food and drink establishments and community uses. Peel has also proposed a new primary school, publicly accessible open space and a 'green bridge' linking the new development with the neighbouring Intu Trafford Centre.

Peel development director James Whittaker said, in a statement: "We have been working on the vision and masterplan for Trafford Waters for over 15 years. It will be an exemplar, sustainable development that will create a space for a new community to live, work and play. The strong links with the Intu Trafford Centre and Trafford Leisure Village and unrivalled transport connections, including the Trafford Park Metrolink extension, will make Trafford Waters the place to be."

“I am delighted that we are able to present plans which, if approved, will help address housing need in the area and provide new business and employment opportunities, all while regenerating and enhancing a prominent but underused site in a fantastic waterfront location," said Whittaker. "I am confident that Trafford Waters will be an asset to the entire region.”

The developer said it would hold public exhibitions on the plans on 19 March and 21 March.
