Outline planning permission has been granted for a regeneration scheme at Albion Quayside in Gravesend. Gravesham Borough Council's planning committee will allow the proposed scheme to proceed.

The proposals for the regeneration scheme, on a site next to the canal basin, include the remediation and stabilisation of the land at the site; the building of 650 new homes; the construction of a riverside walkway, and the building of a new quayside square.

The proposals for the scheme include the building of three slim nine storey towers which are designed to to act as "marker" buildings to signal the new urban quarter, the architects said. Most of the scheme would be between four and five storeys high.

In total, the permission allows the developers to include 46,250 square feet of light industrial space and 30,500 sq ft of mixed-use commercial space.

The scheme was revised following an earlier application in 2006. The revisions included a reduction in the number of new homes by 189. In addition, the revised scheme includes a number of benefits "as a result of ongoing engagement with stakeholders and the local community", said Kiran Curtis Architects (KCA), the architects for the scheme.

The revised proposals include strengthened sailing and boating leisure activity offer by reinstating the canal, widening New Albion Parade and providing access to future pontoons on the river. A neighbourhood of family housing has also been created to the south of the canal intended to provide housing to meet local needs.
