Plans submitted for 500 homes around Carnwath Road

Fulham Riverside West Partnership (FRWP) has submitted three planning applications for the regeneration of land around Carnwath Road in south Fulham, the preferred location for development in connection with Thames Water's proposed Thames Tunnel.

The planning applications submitted to the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (LBHF) proposed up to 500 riverside homes, shops and offices. Proposals also include the reinstatement of the river path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Carnwath Road has also been selected by Thames Water as its 'preferred site' for a main compound in west London to build the proposed Thames Tunnel, plans for which include the construction of a 22-mile long super-sewer that would sit under the riverbed.

Thames Water wants to use an area the size of six football pitches for round-the-clock construction work that will last at least six years, the Council said.

FRWP submitted three applications for the proposed development of two separate wharves and an industrial estate. The plans are designed to open up the river walk for more recreation activities and provide a mix of new homes and jobs, said FRWP.

The aim is to "create a vibrant new riverside community' to the west of Wandsworth Bridge and east of Hurlingham Park", the partnership said, which is made up of the landowners of Whiffen Wharf, Hurlingham Wharf and Carnwath Road Industrial Estate.

There is much local opposition to Thames Water's plans to locate a Super Sewer compound on its proposed Carnwath Road site. A coalition of Fulham residents' groups and amenity societies – known as SSF (Stop them Shafting Fulham) and backed by the Council – has risen up against Thames Water's plans, the Council said.

"The planning applications committee will consider the south Fulham regeneration plans on their own merits later in the year but, in the meantime, we remain committed to fighting Thames Water's damaging super-sewer plans," said Councillor Nicholas Botterill, leader of the LBHF. "It is clear that Thames Water's super-sewer threatens to devastate south Fulham and, whatever the outcome of the plans for new homes and jobs, we will fight this costly and unnecessary stink-pipe all the way."

A consultation on the proposed development is planned to held in the near future and the planning applications committee is expected to consider the plans later in the year, the Council said.
