Heathrow-based transport company Menzies World Cargo is to pay £25,000 to the Business Software Alliance (BSA) for use of unlicensed software. According to the BSA, the company was discovered using unlicensed copies of Adobe and Microsoft software.

The individual who provided the information is to receive a £2,500 reward, in accordance to BSA's incentive scheme for whistleblowers which can result in rewards of up to £10,000.

Des Vertannes, Managing Director of Menzies World Cargo blamed oversight as a result of workload:

"Put simply, our IT team was overwhelmed with the essential job of keeping the business operational... software management was not given the attention it needed.

"With the help of BSA, we now have set up solid software management procedures to make sure we always have the correct licenses for the software on our network. We hope that other companies take heed of how easy it is to let software asset management slip down the priority list during times of change."
