The Department of Trade and Industry this week launched a consultation seeking views on a proposal to consolidate into a single Act various pieces of legislation that provide the legal basis for the management of radio spectrum.

Currently there are six separate Acts directly relating to various aspects of regulating the use of radio spectrum. A consolidated Act, says the DTI, would combine these under a single piece of primary legislation, greatly improving clarification, reference and use.

The proposed consolidation measure is restricted to reproducing the effect of the existing legislation, including parts of last year's Communications Act. There will be no policy changes to the way in which radio spectrum is managed.

The consultation seeks views from all interested parties and the final date for responses is 28th October 2004.
