Outline plans by property group Urban&Civic for a 11 million square feet urban extension at Alconbury Weald have been given backing by Huntingdonshire District Council.

The Council's planning committee this week resolved to grant planning permission for the major scheme which will include the construction of 5,000 homes as well as 3m sq ft of industrial employment space on a former airfield site.

The scheme will also have schools, shops and leisure facilities and is expected to create 8,000 jobs over the next 20 to 25 years. The site has previously been granted planning consent for around 7m sq ft of distribution warehousing.

"We are fully grateful to the Councillors of Huntingdon District Council and to Stukeleys Parish Council for the strong and sustained backing given to Alconbury Weald," said Urban&Civic executive chairman Nigel Hugill in a statement.  "This is happy timing, following the confirmation last week of funding for the A14 in the Chancellor's Autumn Statement which was so significant to the area and the region," he added.

Grant of planning permission is subject to a call-in of the application by the Secretary of State (SoS) for his determination. Urban&Civic said it expect a decision from the SoS in the New Year.
