London developer Cathedral Group plans to build a 5,000-home private rented sector (PRS) portfolio over the next five years, the Estates Gazette has reported .

According to the reports, the Group was this week due to submit a planning application to Newham Council for its potential first PRS scheme. The proposals include a 336-home development as well as 30,000 square feet of commercial space at a warehouse site in east London's Canning Town.

The Group has appointed former Crossrail and London Docklands Development Corporation chairman Sir Christopher Benson to an advisory board to provide regeneration and PRS expertise.

Cathedral chief executive Richard Upton told Estates Gazette that the company has spent the last five years securing sites in "exactly the right places" and that it was keen to be involved in more stages of the regeneration process, including building, curating places and being hands-on with tenants.
