Plans for a number of new villages comprising up to 6,000 new homes on the outskirts of Scunthorpe have been revealed in a consultation launched today.

The Lincolnshire Lakeside scheme will see the development of entire new villages along with new business and leisure facilities between the western edge of Scunthorpe and the River Trent.

North Lincolnshire Council and its partner Lucent Group have set out four options proposing to build between five and six villages. It said it expects the scheme to create "thousands" of construction jobs.

"It is a major step forward and we want to consult with residents in and around the area," said Council leader Liz Redfern according to local reports. "This is a quality scheme and each village is going to be unique."

"We are looking to create a number of new villages with 6,000 new homes. There will be opportunities for leisure, recreation and sport, within a unique lakeside setting," Redfern said.

"There are four options and we want residents to provide their views on which option best suits this type of setting. Some options will have distinct village centres with opportunities for shops and schools, village halls and village greens. That sort of thing keeps communities together," she said.

The Council said it expects the homes to be completed by 2026.
