The Croydon Partnership has announced that it has commenced the process of defining the land required to bring forward its proposed redevelopment of the retail centre of Croydon, London.

The Croydon Partnership is a joint venture formed by Westfield and Hammerson plc in January this year to undertake the "£1 billion redevelopment" of the Whitgift Centre.  The partnership reported that the proposed scheme would create 5,000 jobs and act as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the town centre.

The Croydon Partnership announcement said: "Operating in the national legal framework and supported by Croydon Council and the Greater London Authority, the Croydon Partnership is notifying all businesses and retailers affected by the re-development plans.  The priority is to ensure that all businesses involved are consulted on a one-to-one basis, working with all parties concerned to seek short and long-term solutions."

The partnership anticipates that it will secure planning consent in 2013, with construction expected to start on site in 2015.
