The mixed-use development project, which began in 2009, is located on the banks of the River Itchen and will cost an estimated £500 million to complete. The third phase will include 329 residential units; a supermarket; cafes; restaurants, and a public plaza.
The developer said that it is intended to create "an attractive leisure and amenity area to regenerate the area for all to enjoy". The first two phases of the project, currently under construction, include 336 homes, a library and a children’s nursery.
Crest Nicholson Regeneration Managing Director Debbie Aplin said that the public amenity aspects of the proposals gained substantial support at a public exhibition and that "it was recognised that they will support the local economy and increase the diversity of the retail offering in Woolston".
Centenary Quay is being developed in partnership between Crest Nicholson and the Homes & Communities Agency.
“The HCA is delighted that the next phase of Centenary Quay has been approved today and that we are able to continue our productive working relationship with both Crest and Southampton City Council. This is testament to the success of Phases One and Two," said Peter Cusdin, development director of the HCA.
When outline planning permission was granted for the project as a whole in December 2009, it was ranked number 45 on Planning's listing of the 100 biggest regeneration projects in the UK.
