King's College submits Canada Water student accommodation and office proposals

King's College London has submitted a planning application to Southwark Council for a major mixed-use redevelopment of the former Mulberry Business Park site in Canada Water.

The proposed scheme includes the construction of a number of new buildings reaching up to nine storeys in height to comprise 770 student bedrooms, of which half is intended as postgraduate accommodation, as well as 33 affordable homes, 4,490 square metres of office space, a health centre and shops.

The College has agreed an option to purchase the site which is subject to planning permission for the scheme being granted. It said in a statement that its long term plans for the site include a mixed-use teaching and learning facility as well as indoor sporting facilities.

"I believe that Canada Water offers an unparalleled opportunity for the college and the London Borough of Southwark to create a vibrant, unique centre that will benefit our students and staff and make a positive economic, educational and cultural contribution to the local community," said King's real estate development director Ralph Luck.

The College said that the proposals are part of its strategy to grow student numbers by 2,250 and academic staff numbers by 150 by 2016. Subject to planning permission, it said that work on the site is expected to start in 2014 and to be complete for the academic year 2016/17.
