Lambeth Council to deliver Brixton private rented sector scheme

Lambeth Council is set to carry out a 280-home development at Somerleyton Road in Brixton in London's SW9 with the majority of the homes to be provided for private rental.

The Council will deliver the £60 million regereration scheme, which will comprise 40% homes for council rent and the remainder for private rent, in partnership with local organisations Brixton Green and the Ovalhouse Theatre. As well as the homes, the plans include the construction of a new arts and cultural centre.

The Council had previously been looking for a private development partner for the scheme. It said in a Cabinet report (24-page / 238KB PDF) issued for a meeting earlier this month that it recognised "that there is an opportunity to do things differently at Somerleyton Road and to deliver a flagship project cooperatively". It said the approach would be "shaped by local people, be unique to Brixton and give us the best chance of meeting people’s aspirations".

"This is a new approach for Lambeth, and we’re excited about working with both Brixton Green and Ovalhouse theatre on these ambitious plans," said the Council's cabinet member for housing and regeneration Pete Robbins in a statement.

The Council said it is hoping to secure planning permission for the proposals by September next year and to start work on the site in 2015.
